Colic and Stomach Discomfort in Babies and Infants

Many infants experience regular bouts of stomach discomfort, bloating and general fussiness throughout the early months of life. Whether from teething, food intolerance or some other reason, this discomfort oftentimes leads to crying or irritability. In more severe cases, a baby may cry or wail inconsolably for prolonged periods of time and appear to be in a state of significant physical discomfort by drawing up the legs to the belly, arching their back, and having a red, flushed face. When this occurs in an otherwise healthy baby in excess of three hours per day for three days per week, and for at least three weeks in a row, the baby is said to have colic.1

Rates of colic occur at equal frequency irrespective of whether a baby was bottle fed or formula fed, and without regard to birth order, gender or culture. While the exact cause of colic id unknown, leading theories include: 2

  • Spasms in the muscles of a baby’s immature digestive system
  • Excessive amounts of air being swallowed during normal bouts of crying, resulting in painful gas and bloating
  • An irregular ratio of “good” to “bad” bacteria in the digestive tract

When methods such as swaddling, burping, infant massage, or a warm bath are not effective in alleviating their little ones’ painful gas, bloating and stomach discomfort, many parents turn to the effective age old tradition of Gripe Water.

What is Gripe Water
